The New York Times has released a new major feature to its homepage, making it a whole new desirable destination, reports Talking New Media.

The Times’ new section, called “Watching”, contains a “news feed featuring early versions of news stories the paper are developing, curated content, and tweets from NYT reporters and others.”

The Times is incorporating elements of social media, video content, photography, and curated content to make its homepage more attractive to website visitors. The content is all news — not the filler that can be found on other website homepages.

Dean Baquet, the executive editor at NYT, considers the homepage to be “more essential” due to this addition of content.

Now it’s interesting to see how this change impacts traffic and engagement for NYT. If Watching becomes a hit with audience because of its multimedia arsenal of newsworthy content, we may see more digital publishers turning towards this strategy in the future.
