Social Networking Book Review: How to Really Use LinkedIn by Jan Vermeiren

Online social networking strategy anyone can utilize
It’s not who you know, but who they know.
As we’ve stated before, when you connect with someone new, peruse their list of connections.  You never know who they know unless you look.  One advantage with online social networking sites like LinkedIn, you can easily access second and third degree connections.  What a fantastic tool!

How LinkedIn Differs?
“Although some people think it is a sales tool, for me LinkedIn is a networking platform: it is a platform to start and maintain relationships. The consequence of building relationships might be a sale, but also a new job, finding a new employee, supplier, partner or expertise.”  Jan Vermeiren

How to REALLY use LinkedIn by Jan Vermeiren, teaches us five fundamental principles of online social networking to get results.  Here they are:

Networking Attitude
The Golden Triangle of Networking
The Real Power of the Network is in the Second Degree
Quality and Diversity are Both Important
Your “Know, Like and Trust” Factor

The Power of the Second Degree
Your first degree network is the most important, that’s how you reach the second degree network.  Therein, lies the real power of online social networking.  It’s not who you know, but who they know.  This is where opportunities will present themselves.

Discover social media marketing tips for doing business on Twitter—that you can start using today—when you download Twitter Advice For (and From) Content Marketers for FREE right now.

Connect with your Connections
Take time to get to know your connections, who are they, what are they looking for, what are their goals.  You may be surprised to find how much you have in common.  By eliminating the “hard sell” element, online social networking becomes easier, even fun.
Get Involved
So many activities, so little time.  Spend some time searching for groups that interest you, by industry, hobby or alum. Then, participate in their group discussions.  Vote and comment in user created polls. Ask or answer questions, you just may be crowned an “expert” in specific categories.  Give a sincere recommendation, without being solicited.  The best way to get something, is to give something.

Put the power of online social networking to work for your business.  In the end you will find new business opportunities, brand affinity and yes, increased revenue.
