Email marketing is a form of direct marketing that utilizes email to sell products. Email marketing is the most relevant form of marketing online as email usage has become habitual for the majority of adult Internet users in the US.

Scaling Marketing for a Growing Product Line

Multiplatform publishers have a lot more choices – and decisions – to make about marketing campaigns. It’s almost enough to make even a strong person run screaming for the nearest direct mail package designer, isn’t it? But you don’t have to surrender to the confusion – paralysis by analysis is not an option!

Big Strength Behind Email Marketing Continues

A new report on email marketing from ClickZ with Adestra reveals adjustments to email user habits

Email marketing is still a powerful medium, even though some pundits have been talking about its decline for years. A new report from ClickZ with Adestra details the value of email marketing today.

Magazine Marketing: Using Email to Boost Advertising Sales

“It’s more effective than direct mail and as effective as telephone – and so much less expensive.” That’s a quote from ClickZ’s latest report, Email and the Age of First-Person Marketing. While marketers were saying just three years ago that social would consume email, it’s proven to become even more powerful and celebrated during that time, especially in magazine marketing. A study by the Direct Marketing Association shows that “email campaigns conducted with house lists achieved an ROI of 30% to 32%, compared with 15% to 17% from social media, and 18% to 20% for direct mail using house lists.”

CMS Development Services: 3 Things to Consider

It’s not just magazine, newsletter and newspaper publishers who seek custom CMS development services. Content management systems are built for most media businesses, even those who may not consider themselves in media but produce digital content regularly. The trouble with finding a content management system is that despite the word “content” in the title, rarely do out-of-the box solutions work for publishers, and rarely do even the most talented custom CMS developers understand publishing business models enough to build a system that is built to attract, capture, engage, and monetize all in the same place.

19 Digital Publishing Solutions You May Need As a Magazine Publisher

Are you acting as the general contractor of your content management system when it’s supposed to be managing itself?

3 Email Subject Line Best Practices: New Study Sheds Light

Is there still anyone out there maligning email as a has-been component of publishing? We sure hope not. Newsletters are hotter than ever, for starters, and emails operate as a another strong delivery mechanism for content like video. They build loyalty with existing consumers, create relationships with new consumers, and give you the opportunity to sell products. But none of this can happen if recipients don’t click open your emails, which itself can’t happen without email subject line best practices.

UK-based email marketing firm Adestra knows this as well as anyone, and their first study since a blockbuster 2013 analysis provides plenty of takeaways. This new edition ran the numbers on 3 billion attempted sends and more than 400 million opens. Let’s take a look at what they learned.

How You Could and Should Use Video Email Marketing

How video email marketing can drastically increase your CTR
One main advantage of multi-platform publishing is recycling content into videos.
Think about it: what entices a website viewer more than a video sample of exclusive, paid-for conferences? These events are the single biggest revenue channel for many publishers, where extra care is put into providing ticket purchasers

More Newsletter Open Rates: Taking a Look at the Times’ Numbers

Yesterday, we relayed MediaPost’s news about the Movable Ink study finding that mobile email marketing has eclipsed desktop open rates, which is great news for multiplatform publishers who have Email Marketing Systems. As email shrugs off the greatly exaggerated reports of its demise and re-establishes itself as a strong audience development tool, newsletter open rates have become a more important area of focus for digital magazines and other brands.

The Mequoda Method has long emphasized newsletter open rates as a key strategic point of multiplatform publishing, but even we were taken aback by The New York Times’ success when it comes to the art of email. So, we were interested to learn more in Digiday’s recent article about the Old Gray Lady’s staggering 70% yield.

Mobile Email Marketing: Open Rates Eclipse Desktop for First Time

Mastering mobile email marketing might sound like it’s low on the list of priorities for digital magazines, but, in reality, it’s rapidly emerging as one of the most pressing skills for multiplatform publishers looking to improve their content distribution strategy.

For starters, consider the level of control you have when it comes to your message and branding: Provided you’re using best practices to get your correspondence white-listed, images seen, and subject lines clicked, then you’re in prime position to get your emails read. And if your emails are getting read, then you’re also getting an audience for your website, because you’re giving subscribers a reason to visit.

All of this used to happen primarily on desktop, but not anymore. MediaPost relays news that mobile email marketing has surpassed desktop for the first time. Let ‘s start there this week!

Email Campaign Strategy: Google’s Latest Tool + Content Best Practices

Email campaign strategy has emerged as a crucial component of multi-platform publishing, even as wrong-headed observers have pronounced it DOA in recent years. The Mequoda Method highly values online newsletters as a ripe opportunity to build loyalty, expand audience, and cultivate serious levels of conversion. But we also know that email can be unwieldy with poor design, unkempt lists, and static content – let alone faulty SPAM filters. Navigating these challenges will put you in the position of realizing all of the benefits sound email campaign strategy promises. Well, Business2Community.com has some good news for one of those challenges, and also provides a couple of best practices when it comes to the content itself. Let’s see what they have to say with some recent coverage.

What is B2B Email Marketing?

B2B stands for Business to Business. Because I’ve worked in B2B my entire career, I didn’t realize that there are B2C (Business to Consumer) marketers who haven’t heard the term. Sometimes when I attend events, I’ll blurt it out like second nature and it results in a furrowed brow and a, “what’s B2B stand for again?” Ah, the anti-jargonist went ahead and jargoned. Drats!

According to iContact, customers who receive email newsletters spend 82% more when they buy from the company. So if you’re in B2B, and you’re a publisher, you have no excuse not to send regular emails to your subscriber list. You have expensive products, and you have lots of content. Email marketing is a prime place to share content and promote products.

Email Analytics: Unsubscribes & Bounces in a Nutshell

Most publishers have three basic sets of online analytics to look at: website, email and social media. There are smaller buckets that fit into each category, but for the most part, these are at the top.

Within email analytics, there are two numbers that we have the greatest ability to work with. The human element of email analytics has room for adjustment but is mostly out of our control. We can’t force people to sign up for our newsletter, we can’t get them to read the whole thing, and we can’t get them to click links if our copy isn’t compelling enough.

5 Tips for Email Marketing Calls to Action

How to get your readers to act with buttons and text

The best emails are fully engaging; the content interests the reader enough to go through the entire email while the relevant calls to actions persuade the reader to get more involved with a brand. This can equate to purchasing a product, signing up for a future event or subscribing to more content through Twitter or Facebook.

In order to start this process, strong calls to action need to be employed throughout the email.

Increase Your Average Email Open Rate in 20 Easy Steps

In your email marketing system (EMS), there’s a dashboard that gives you your email open rate – the percentage of users who opened an email from you. Typically 16% is an average number for the publishing industry, so if you have anything above, consider your efforts above average.

Unfortunately, on the web, you may find all kinds of fun information about open rates and how inaccurate they can be (like 11% to 35% inaccurate).

The Truth About Email Marketing

Is it somehow improper for email newsletter editors to support audience development efforts? Is it wrong for bloggers to promote a product from an advertiser, or from themselves?

The Biggest Email Marketing Drag: Is Your Email Retention Rate Too Low?

No matter how well you’re doing, you can always do better. So is your retention rate too low? Yes! If it’s not 100% (it never is) then your email retention rate could improve.

To determine your email retention rate, use this formula:

The True Cost of Email Marketing

Tiered Rate cards can be used for calculating hosting charges, interest rates, credit card fees, the list goes on.

Email pricing for publishers, the rate they’re charged to send emails, looks a bit like how retailers are charged to process credit card payments.

In retail, two popular forms of payment processing rates are the most prevalent today: Interchange Plus and Tiered Pricing.

Retailers like Interchange Plus the best because it’s transparent, the retailer is charged a percentage per transaction. The Tiered pricing model is less transparent, but simplifies pricing by providing bucket rates. Tiered pricing also often includes lots of extra fees that aren’t accounted for in the buckets.

The cost of email marketing typically works on a similar tiered bucketed pricing model, and like retail tiered pricing models, often ends up in hidden fees you weren’t expecting.

What is an Email Subject Line?

Put simply, an email subject line is the 50ish character sentence you write that causes people to open your email (or not open). Publishers don’t often ask the question of what an email subject line is, because they open and answer emails every day. Every time you get an email, it comes with a subject line. If it’s well-written and clever, it will cause you to open. If it’s descriptive and urgent, it might even cause you to click a link once you’ve opened the email. But for the sake of broadening our glossary of publishing definitions, let’s take this email subject line definition even further.

Top Technology For Digital Marketers

Digital marketers have a lot of technical resources to help them collect and utilize data, but which technology is most valuable?

Kiplinger’s Guidelines for Third-Party Email Marketing

A few weeks ago, we got an email from Greg Krehbiel, Director of Marketing Operations at The Kiplinger Washington Editors, Inc. Like many publishers, Kiplinger works with partners and advertisers on promotional email marketing campaigns, and it’s rarely a simple process.
