Five easy audience development steps to increasing website traffic by repurposing old articles on Twitter

You have lots of awesome content on your blog. Some of that awesome content hasn’t been seen by people in a long time. This is especially true if you’re not all too keen on SEO like many print publishers that tend to simply dump old print articles on their blog without optimizing them. But there’s hope!

We’re all publishers here. This should not be a problem for us. We create content in our sleep! These archives of content that we have in our blog can easily turn us into champions of both Twitter and of repurposing content. In other words, we have a serious advantage over the rest of the Internet.

Here’s a simple run down of how to leverage your Twitter  followers to increase website traffic.

1) Tweet all of those “evergreen” articles that can still provide value to your readers. Tip articles, Product Reviews, How-to articles are excellent for this.

2) Reuse and tweak your best converting email headlines for your tweets. This is great way to quickly setup tweet templates for your staff.

3) Use a service like HootSuite.com to schedule your tweets. This is a great way to save time as well as keep track of your tweets about your articles.

4) Tweet about your articles at different times during the day. Everyone checks their Twitter streams at different times so you need to tweet at different times. This is where tweet scheduling and services like HootSuite can come in handy. Try this tweet schedule out for one week then the following week switch it up.

Try this tweeting schedule for those evergreen articles

Monday – Friday

  • 9:30am
  • 12:15pm
  • 3:30pm
  • 7:45pm

After a month, analyze the data and see which tweet and time correlated to the most unique hits and page views. Wash, rinse and repeat. The results may surprise you.

5)  Make your articles easy to share on your blog. At bare minimum you should have the Twitter Retweet button and the Facebook Like at the top or bottom of each blog post. If you’re running WordPress there are great plug-ins like ShareThis and SexyBookmarks. Both will let you add a multitude of share buttons to each blog post instantly.
