Review The Basics of Successful SEO

5 SEO lessons from this month’s live SEO Basics webinar

Attending a single webinar on SEO basics is never enough.

There is always so much content related to SEO. Our live 90-minute SEO Basics webinar from earlier this month contains over 30 SEO tips for optimizing your website to its fullest potential. Simply attending this webinar live might make it difficult to grasp every technique for SEO that we teach, which is why we offer it on-demand, to view at your convenience.

One thing that can be said for those who did take part in the program is that they received tips that are overlooked by many online editors.

Although some tips mentioned during the webinar were no-brainers (like giving your posts a title), some were very insightful.

Five tips from SEO Basics

We get many of our technical SEO best practices from SEOmoz. However, as we discussed in yesterday’s Mequoda Daily article, not all general SEO tips are streamlined to fit a complex Mequoda System. Most best practice SEO tips are focused on helping a single post rank in search engines, while the Mequoda strategy focuses on using multiple posts to point Google towards our rapid conversion landing pages, offering free downloads in exchange for an email address.

SEO tip #1: Write concise meta descriptions of 150-160 characters. These short paragraphs are the writer’s opportunity to advertise content to searchers and let them know exactly what the given page is about in regard to what they’re looking for.

SEO tip #2: Use appropriate characters in the URL. Characters that are less commonly used in URLs may cause problems with accessibility, interpretation and ranking in search engines. It is considered a best practice to stick to standard URL structures to avoid potential problems.

SEO tip #3: Use two or less parameters in a dynamic URL. Although search engines can crawl dynamic URLs, search engine representatives have warned against using over 2 parameters in any given URL. In the image below, the “&” and the “?” are the parameters in question.

SEO tip #4: Do not use more than one canonical URL tag. If you use more than one, search engines will not properly find the canonical source, leaving little chance of getting ranked.

SEO tip #5: Properly name images. When naming images, do not use spaces or underscores. Instead, use hyphens between the titling words. Also remember to incorporate keyword phrases into the image names.
