Affordable search engine optimization tips for editors (hint—they’re all free)

As a daily editor with evergreen topics, I simply cannot write a post without targeting a keyword. Most articles on the Mequoda blog are useful whether you read them today or whether you read them four years ago.

Many of our most popular articles were published back in 2008, and all of them were optimized for search engines. There’s no way that we’d see even 2% of the traffic we are currently getting on those blogs if we’d named them something flashy, click-worthy and non-descriptive.

Tip #1: Be Proactive.

Affordable search engine optimization requires you to do the legwork yourself. Every day that I write an article, I look at the list of keywords we’ve already created and measured for rank-ability. If there’s a topic I want to write about that isn’t in that list, I research it myself.

Tip #2: Name Products Appropriately.

Listen, even the most magical marketers don’t know exactly how everyone thinks, talks and more importantly—searches. If you think you know what you should call your product, you probably don’t.

I’ve been wrong a hundred times and I’ll continue to be wrong, but I’ll never name a product something just because my intuition tells me to. In fact, I won’t even create a product based on intuition, I’m always going to research it first. If nobody is looking for it, I’m not going to make it.

Tip #3: Don’t watch and wait.

Just because you posted an amazing article with an equally amazing targeted keyword doesn’t mean that everyone is going to come to you to read it. Post it on social networks and anywhere else you have the opportunity. A kettle of inbound links is the secret sauce to SEO.

While you’re at it, just go ahead and make sure you spell everything correctly. Google hates bad spellers.
