Looking for the latest SMO news? Twitter, Google and Facebook are always making changes and it can be hard to keep up with the latest updates but social-media-optimization.com is a great place to see what alterations have been made and how you should adjust. Below are a few articles that cover the recent modifications these platforms have made.

What Twitter Did On Summer Vacation

Remember that summer before Freshman year of high school? All of a sudden, being the coolest and most popular kid on the block became top priority. You begin looking closer at the other cool kids on the block, and realize that the things that people associate with you now are NOT what you want to carry with you anymore, so you make a few changes and hope that they’ll make people like you better.

Twitter is the perfect example of this phenomenon – they’ve seen their rival from across town become extremely popular (Google), they’ve realized it’s time to end friendships (by limiting their API), and they’re desperate to get invited to the cool kids table (with big media brands).

News and Highlights from Google IO 2012

Google I/O is an annual developer-focused conference held by Google in San Francisco, California. Google I/O features highly technical, in-depth sessions focused on building web, mobile, and enterprise applications with Google and open web technologies such as Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, Google APIs, Google Web Toolkit, App Engine, and more. While there is little talk of traditional social media and marketing tactics, the news and innovations that come out of I/O usually make important waves in the socialsphere, so we felt it was important to break down the highlights.

Project Glass Live Demonstration – Project Glass (along with the self-driving car) is Google’s most “futuristic” innovation. In essence, it’s a set of eyeglasses that project an augmented reality interface that only the user can see. From the previous demo video, we know it will be capable of sending and receiving text messages and calls, displaying directions to a destination, and taking and sharing photos and video.

Examining Facebook’s Latest Updates and Features

Facebook’s recent IPO has been the talk of speculators for weeks now – their less than stellar results have had many in the social-sphere clamoring the end of the Facebook era, and will undoubtedly nitpick every next decision the social media giant takes.

In the past few weeks, there have been several new updates, features, and considerations that Facebook have launched – opening access to users under the age of 13, better administrative tools for business pages, and a platform to promote individual posts to fans of a business page. Let’s examine the details and reactions for each.

Facebook for Kids

In a recent article from The Wall Street Journal, it was reported that Facebook is developing technology that would allow children younger than 13 years old to use the social-networking site under parental supervision. Mechanisms being tested include connecting children’s accounts to their parents’ and controls that would allow parents to decide whom their kids can “friend” and what applications they can use.

What’s Right for You, Facebook’s Sponsored Stories or Promoted Posts?

Does one of Facebook’s featured ad types work better for your audience? Let’s take a look at your options

Hearing the term “Sponsored Stories” makes me immediately think about digital publishers. Aren’t we all sharing some form of story, after all? Under this basis, it would seem that sponsoring a story and targeting your core audience with it is a good idea. But does your audience pay attention to paid promotions, or do they want something more organic? Although also a paid option, Promoted Posts appear to be more organic because of their placement.

Have you considered using Sponsored Stories or Promoted Posts while marketing on Facebook? Have you already used either of these promotional methods and want to share your results? The Mequoda Daily community would certainly enjoy hearing your first-hand accounts.

For now, there is background information below on Promoted Posts and Sponsored Stories, and some information on what’s worked best for a few brands.
