The iPad and Web Apps

The “iPadification” of mobile apps

We have been talking about the impact devices like the iPad will have on the online publishing industry since the tablet device was released.

These changes won’t be strictly due to the iPad – other tablet devices, web trends and additional technology will play a part as well.

However, one thing online publishers should take a look at is how mobile devices are influencing the way apps are created.

For instance, Mashable has been discussing the “iPadification” of web design for a few months now.

This of course refers to the way tablet devices are transforming the way web design is done.

Since Google Chrome’s Web Store recently opened, with an array of optimized web apps, it’s easy to see similarities between the apps found in the store and one’s created for the iPad.

Mashable compared these apps recently and discussed it in an article. The similarities found between apps may be worth considering while creating your own app in the future.

Some of these similarities include:

-Content optimized to the size of the device’s screen, or for web browsers

-Touch screen friendly (if designing for the iPad)

-Built-in social sharing opportunities

-Usable and attractive interface

-An interface that allows for consistent experience between platforms
