Bullish 5-year study on digital magazine market shows record growth; plus, Forbes’ focus on events
But we’re in the trenches, working shoulder to shoulder with publishing executives: Many trends we can anticipate; others we experience in real time. But it sure is nice to get good news in the form of bird’s eye air support from industry studies like the one we relay below.
Digital Magazine Market Study Shows Sunny Forecast
A recent Technavio study reveals optimistic projections for the digital magazine market during the next five years, MediaPost’s Publishers Daily reports.
“The global market for digital magazine publishing will pass $35 billion by 2020, with a cumulative annual growth rate exceeding 20% over the next five years, according to a new forecast from Technavio. This growth will be powered by growing penetration of the Internet around the world, as well as soaring adoption of smartphones and tablets, Technavio predicts,” Erik Sass writes.
“In proportional terms, digital magazines are expected to increase from 14% of the total global magazine publishing market to 35% by 2020, with the Americas leading the way in regional adoption, followed by Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia. Led by the U.S., the Americas market will grow at an annual rate of about 20% to surpass $15 billion by 2020, while Europe, the Middle East and Africa will be a close second, exceeding $14 billion by 2020. The Asia Pacific market is still in its infancy, but should reach $6 billion by 2020.”
Bauer Xcel Media Shows Strong Gains in Digital Magazine Market
Bauer Xcel Media is a big part of that digital magazine market explosion, as its share has grown more than 40% year-over-yer, MediaPost’s Publisher’s Daily reports.
“The U.S. digital business of celebrity and lifestyle magazine publisher Bauer Media Group, Bauer Xcel Media US, today announced that it grew its average monthly unique users in the U.S. by 42% from 2014 to 2015. Its unique user numbers jumped from 15.9 million in 2014 to 22.6 million in 2015,” Sara Guaglione writes.
“According to a statement from the company, Bauer Xcel Media now reaches 150 million monthly unique users worldwide. Christian Baesler, president of Bauer Xcel Media’s US operations, stated that his division’s properties started with only about 1 million average monthly users in 2012. Now, their brands reach more than 25 million unique users per month in the U.S.”

Forbes Focuses on Publisher Events With New Venue
Forbes has opened Forbes on 5th in the Big Apple with an eye toward expanding publisher events, MediaPost’s Publishers Daily reports.
“These events will support the engines that drive our business, ranging from editorial events promoting our content and key franchises, such as 30 Under 30, to strategic marketing and advertising activities with current or potential partners,’ said Laura Daunis, senior manager of corporate communications at Forbes Media, told Publishers Daily,” Guaglione writes.
“Forbes will also offer to host a content event at Forbes on Fifth for each BrandVoice Premium partner and will invite influencers to speak or attend. Most events will be in partnership with brands that do business and advertise with Forbes.”
