Digital Magazine Websites: New Growth and a New Launch

Digital magazine websites Pitchfork and SI Swimsuit experienced highest traffic to date; ‘Marin Arts & Culture’ debuts with print and digital editions

Today we’re looking at a few digital magazine websites that are experiencing new territories. We begin with a Condé Nast publication that’s having a great traffic experience. Pitchfork has experienced some major stats, and Folio is reporting on this story. “Pitchfork’s coverage of the 59th annual Grammy Awards yielded the music site’s highest traffic day ever last Monday. With 1.5 million unique viewers, the music site saw a 275 percent increase over its 400,000 average daily unique views.”

“Thanks in part to weeks of planning and a dedicated weekend team, readership was up 383 percent from Pitchfork’s 2016 Grammy coverage, which netted only 290,000 unique views.”

The article continues by discussing what the publication did to receive this increase in traffic. “This year, however, the publication wrote real-time posts the day of the event, followed by several pieces of analysis spanning popular topics like artist tributes and race at the Grammys — coverage which brought the site up to 3.6 million page views on Monday alone.”

Next, we move to MediaPost, which is reporting on Sports Illustrated. “…the 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is setting all kinds of digital records before the print issue even hits the newsstands, according to publisher Time Inc. That includes unprecedented video viewing and social engagement numbers.”

SI’s online destination for the issue, SI.com/Swimsuit, has generated over 215 million page views, with a record amount of average time spent on site at over four minutes per visit.”

The article continues with a deeper look at the stats. “Over the same period, SI’s video offerings have racked up over 36.5 million views across various platforms — more than twice the video views during last year’s launch, and the best week for SI ever in video viewing.”

“Of these views, over 28 million views came from SI’s social channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.”

“A dozen Facebook Live productions for the Swimsuit issue garnered 3 million views, contributing to a total 13 million views on Facebook, while SI Swim on Instagram generated four million video views.”

Finally, we take a look at a new publication coming to print and digital. Digital Journal reports, “Despite the upheaval to traditional print by digital technology, arts patron, entrepreneur and now publisher, Meredith Browning Griffin is pleased to announce the debut of a new magazine called ‘Marin Arts & Culture.'”

The article continues by sharing the publisher’s interest in creating the magazine. “”Combining my publishing experience with my love of the arts, she said. I decided to launch an e-magazine to give a voice and expression to everyone involved in making art, no matter what kind of art form, no matter the age of the artist. I very specifically wanted a digital magazine. I was waiting for the technology to catch up with what I wanted to do. Most online magazines are copies of a print version. Not very interesting. I’d rather have a hard copy,” she said.”
