October has been a busy month for hires, promotions, dismissals, and more for publishing executives at the New York Times, Fusion, and Slate

Every once in a while, we like to take a peek at the comings and goings of publishing executives and share what we find with you, especially when hiring trends reflect the direction of digital magazines.

Meredith Hires New Asssociate Publisher

Meredith has named Jennifer Marder as associate publisher of sales at the Meredith Weddings Group, Fishbowl NY reports. Marder comes from More.

“We are delighted to welcome Jennifer to the Meredith Weddings Group,” Meredith Weddings Group Vice President and Publisher Patti Follo said  in a statement. “She is passionate about the bridal category and she will be a valuable asset to the continued growth and success of our brands.”

Gawker Giveth and Taketh Away Publishing Executives

Always controversial, Gawker is undergoing quite a transition after the company pulled content in the wake of advertiser complaints. Recent news: Former Gawker leaders Max Read and Kyle Chayka are now at New York Magazine, while Caity Weaver is now at GQ. Meanwhile, after naming John Cook Executive Editor, Gawker has appointed Alex Pareene, formerly of First Look Media and Salon, as editor-in-chief.

Condé Nast Gears Hire Toward Data Strategy

Condé Nast has hired Karthic Bala as head of data strategy.

“Data strategy will play an increasingly important role for Condé Nast as we continue to expand our digital business,” Condé Nast Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer Fred Santarpia said in a statement. “Karthic’s extensive experience and in-depth knowledge will be fundamental as we grow our capabilities on all platforms.”

Fusion Dedicates Position to Innovation and Engagement

In another hiring that’s a sign of the times, Fusion has tapped Sam Ford as vice president of innovation and audience engagement.

New York Times Taps Chief Technology Officer

Meanwhile, the New York Times has named Nick Rockwell chief technology officer.

“Nick’s deft leadership, technical aptitude and experience managing cultural change will be huge assets for The Times as technological innovation becomes ever more essential to our success,” Executive Vice President of Product and Technology Kinsey Wilson said in an in-house memo.

New President Takes the Helm at Slate

Former BuzzFeed Vice President of Brand Strategy Keith Hernandez is now the president of Slate.

“We came across many impressive candidates during our search, and Keith was, by far, the right leader for the role,” Slate Group Chairman Jacob Weisberg said in a statement. “Besides being incredibly smart and having a track record of great client relationships, he helped to grow a brand that we, at Slate, have admired since its inception. His passion and insight into the digital landscape are going to be tremendous advantages to our leadership team.”

TV Guide Has a New Publisher and Chief Revenue Officer

Paul Turcotte is the new publisher and CRO of TV Guide. Turcotte comes via AmpitLive, which was purchased by NTVB Media, which recently purchased TV Guide!
