Awards Update and a Round-Up of Industry News

On Awards, Content, Integration and European Privacy

It’s all about awards here at the SIPA office for the next couple days. The deadline for our SIPAwards competition is tomorrow, March 2. We’ve been very pleased with the enthusiasm so far among members (old and new) in responding to the new categories we’re offering. What will also be of great benefit are the many successful ideas, campaigns, blogs and websites that we are being alerted to that we were not aware of before. I can then pass those successful entities on to you in these articles and in Hotline. So please keep the entries coming in!

Check out the instructions for entering.  Here are the 16 categories: Best Marketing Team of the Year; Best Marketing Campaign of the Year; Best Use of Social Media; Best Editorial and Marketing Collaboration; Rising Star of the Year; Best Investigative Reporting; Best Spot News or Single News Story; Best Interpretative or Analytical Reporting; Best Instructional Reporting; Best Scientific Writing or Technical Reporting; Best One-Topic Special Publication; Best Blog or Commentary; Best Use of Video; Most Improved Publication; Best Online Community; Best New or Relaunched Website

Folio article reports that Hanley Wood, the largest media company covering the construction company, has hired a “president of content”—Bob Benz. He will be a senior-level executive focused exclusively on editorial. CEO Frank Anton said that “editors felt they didn’t have a voice in a lot of important decision-making that affected editorial and that they were represented in a proxy way.”

The article says that Benz will be in charge of converting Hanley Wood from a print-driven to a digital-first company. It seems that they are coming a little late to the party, but the job title is certainly interesting. Also interesting is their decision to eliminate offices and cubicles—and remote employees—in exchange for an open-space newsroom with lots of collaboration. That is definitely the trend now.

The blog Social Media Examiner published a list of 9 Ways to Integrate Email and Social Media Marketing that is worth taking a look at. I particularly like that they give good examples for each of their “ways.” For example, #4 is about providing incentives for people to connect with you, and there’s an ad from a company called Hydro Flask about saving money by liking them on Facebook. Their #6 asks you to include a “Retweet This!” Snippet in your Email. They like that by featuring a particular tweet it can fit nicely in your “share your community’s stuff” mantra.

An article in The New York Times yesterday reported that the “French data protection authority said that Google’s new privacy policy appeared to violate European Union law.” This is of interest to other European Union nations as well because “the French regulator was acting at the request of an advisory panel to the European Commission, which asked the French agency to conduct an initial assessment of the Google privacy changes. The new rules were set to come into effect on Thursday.” Privacy rules vary greatly across Europe, the article says.

An interesting offshoot of this is that Big Brother Watch, a British privacy advocate, released a study this week that said “only 12 percent of Google users had read the new policy. Forty-seven percent were unaware of the changes, the study showed.” The website wrote this: “Much more needs to be done to inform consumers what these changes mean, and how they can take control of their personal information before the changes come into effect. The impact of Google’s new policy cannot be understated, but the public are in the dark about what the changes actually mean.”
