Subscription Websites Can Change Industries

And technology is allowing this to happen

I wrote an article a number of months back discussing the record industry. As I see it, and many would agree, it’s a flawed system ruled by those who aren’t making an attempt to adapt to the changing tides.

I originally wrote the article before the iPad was introduced. And before the use of mobile devices skyrocketed (According to PC Mag, 96% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 19 own a mobile device.)

As a brief update to the changing times, I wanted to theorize on how subscription websites could better this industry.

The issue with the music industry is they haven’t figured out a way to deal with file sharing. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am all for intellectual property rights. I think they are necessary in the evolution of creativity within society, ie: if they didn’t exist, people wouldn’t strive as hard to be creative entrepreneurs because it wouldn’t help them survive monetarily.

Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is people download music illegally, and no matter how hard the industry tries to stop it, via lawsuits and potential legislation, the problem won’t go away easily.

This is where I envision the subscription website to come into play. In addition to endorsements and ticket sales, subscription websites can be set up for individual artists, if they are popular enough, or subscription websites can be utilized for groups of similar musicians.

These subscription websites could be the hub for musicians as they include mobile apps for smartphones and tablet PCs as well. Artists could house all of their content, continuously add new content and develop relationships with their fans through a subscription website model.

Subscription websites can benefit an array of industries, especially if some form of content is the core of the business. And thanks to new technology like smartphones and iPads, that content can be multimedia rich and incredibly desirable to interested audiences.
