Six Clear Messages for Our Digital Future

Six valuable messages and the sessions to cover them

The keynotes, sessions and speakers for SIPA 2012, May 20-22 in Washington, D.C.have all been carefully selected to deliver the most relevant and timely information possible. Here are some excellent tips from speakers pertaining to their sessions or keynotes.

1. “There is going to be a moment when ebooks are about $50 apiece. That is the magic number and when we reach that point there is going to be a new, [more] huge than there is today, reading explosion… This year products will be coming out that have beautiful color video refresh rates and are reflective. That is the next barrier. We have to get away from the glare problem on these devices. So you get the glare problem solved, easier to read, greater ability to reproduce fonts as they are supposed to be reproduced and at a lower price point and then the question is why would I want to read that on paper.”
Bo Sacks, head of Precision Media, will be speaking at Apps/Mobile 101, Monday, May 21, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
(This quote is from a video on What They Think?)

2. “Over the past couple of years, our website and presence in the industry we serve have really grown. In terms of specific initiatives, we have taken what we learned at the SIPA conference on AdWords best practices and already have seen great results from that effort. It’s fun to see work pay off.”
Lindsay Konzak, editor of Modern Distribution Management, will be speaking at Think Digital First (along with colleague Jenel Stelton-Holtmeier) on Monday, May 21, 11 am – noon.

Added MDM Publisher Tom Gale: “Six years ago we were 95% subscription-based, now it’s a third of our revenue. We’re a subscription-advertising hybrid poster child, as online advertising and sponsored free webcasts have each grown to between 20-25% of revenues.” This will be a must-see session.

3. “Build your team with people who are going to be high performers and that means they’re going to have a great attitude and all the skills they need—and they’re really going to fit the culture and be great…we have to understand that each of our attitudes is different…“We have to adapt our hiring approaches and recognize that in this new world attitude is predominant, and if we want to succeed that’s what we’re going to need.”
Mark Murphy, author of Hiring for Attitude: A Revolutionary Approach to Recruiting and Selecting People with Both Tremendous Skills and Superb Attitude, will be delivering the lunchtime keynote on Monday, May 21.

4. “…publishers who rely on freelancers, independent contributors, contractors or other consultants for any type of creative work should have—and pay close attention to—freelancer or independent contributor agreements. These agreements are the most effective way to obtain rights in the work for the publisher and are also critical in ensuring that the publisher has the ability to control how the content of its electronic publications is treated by subscribers.”
This comes from SIPA’s latest Memorandum From Counsel, written by the law firm Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz, L.L.P. Tom Curley and Chad Bowman of that firm will be speaking on Legal Landmines, Monday, May 21, 2:15 – 3:15 p.m.

5. Librarian of Congress Dr. James H. Billington oversees the largest collection of content creation in the world; launched the ground-breaking National Digital Library and the World Digital Library; is in charge of the world’s largest multimedia library; and has steered the Library to be a pioneer in the use of blogs, podcasts, etc.
In a very special appearance, Dr. Billington will deliver the opening keynote address on Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m. (Read more about Dr. Billington in this month’s Hotline newsletter.)

6. “I always focus, given my background and main responsibility—both editorial—on the content. We’re doing a good job of understanding the information needs of our markets and delivering solid, valuable content to them. Just like our business, the industries we cover change constantly, so we can’t get complacent or assume we know things about our market that we don’t. We also need web development colleagues who can deliver our content in a way that is convenient and intuitive to users and a marketing and sales team that can hammer home the message, through whatever channels will work, that the content is indispensable and worth every penny.”
Don Johnston, senior vice president/group publisher for AHC Media, will be speaking on Audience Engagement, Sunday, May 20, 2:10 – 3:10 p.m.
