5 Places to Test Video Landing Page Templates

Mequoda has been testing video landing pages for the past few years with great success. In fact, our Intensive attendees have told us repeatedly that our video is what convinced them to sign up. A few years ago I read a study by EyeView that said businesses who tested video on the homepages and landing pages saw a conversion rate increase up to 86%. These results were based on multiple iterations of video and placement, but 86% is no small feat.

ABC to Track and Measure Digital Magazine Distribution, Readership

Digital magazine distribution and consumption will receive the Audit Bureau of Circulations treatment; plus, Google follows Apple’s lead and Time Inc.’s vision
Digital magazine distribution, readership, ad views, and more are all sliced and diced in some way, shape, or form, but the question these days is accuracy, veracity, and reliability. The future of digital advertising

Online Magazine Business News: Video, Social, Mergers & Acquisitions

Despite all of the ups and downs of digital publishing, the online magazine business keeps on cranking along, and companies like Time Inc. continue to set the pace with strategic partnerships. In addition, social media strategy gets a bit of news, and we relay word of more mergers & acquisitions.

Native Ads Network Launched by None Other Than AP

While it might have blindsided some industry observers and rubbed some old-school publishers the wrong way, the recent news that the Associated Press is launching a native ads network shouldn’t come as all that big a surprise. While the ubiquitous press organization itself doesn’t depend directly on an advertising revenue model, its member newspapers certainly do, and as the International Business Times reports, their ranks are decreasing.

Magazine Publishing Company News: Time Inc., Meredith, B2B

Is there a more historically iconic and currently intriguing magazine publishing company than Time Inc.?

We’ve watched with fascination their efforts to not only stay relevant and viable, but also to compete hard with digital natives and startups. They’re acting like a magazine publishing company who wants to do even bigger things, and thus are setting a great example for Mequoda Members.

So, what’s next for them?

Digital Magazine Circulation Data: To Report or Not to Report?

Circulation reporting and auditing has been a meticulous science for more than a century. Then digital magazine publishing came along to shake it up for the first time in decades.

In fact, if you haven’t read our recent look into AAM’s reporting methods. The short story is that AAM doesn’t count subscription numbers, they count subscriber numbers. If someone is subscribed to your digital edition and your print edition, you only get to count it once. Most publishers choose to tally subscribers under their print editions, so their number of digital subscribers look small compared to the reality of that last, and regardless of whether a subscriber paid more to get the digital edition as part of a combo package.

Social Media Publisher? Check Out These Facebook and Snapchat Updates

For the enterprising social media publisher, Facebook video and Snapchat represent a promising future
What does it mean to be a social media publisher these days? It means you’re willing to experiment. It means you’re willing to venture out of your comfort zone. It means you’re willing to invest in dedicated staff. It means you can

The Most Common AdWords Mistakes Many Publishers Make

While using Google AdWords looks easy, it takes knowledge and hard work to be good at it. But there’s a big payoff. If you follow the advice below and correct just one of the following AdWords mistakes, you may find that your response and revenue double or even triples – overnight.

Multi-Channel Publishing: Economist, InStyle, and More

Multi-channel publishing, multiplatform publishing, content distribution strategy: Whatever the label, proactive media companies meeting their readers on their own turf are emerging more and more as the best digital magazines. In fact, as Don has pointed out recently, multiplatform is the new normal.

How to Create Magazine Spin-Off Products Like a Trump

Politics aside, can we agree that Donald Trump is kind of a multiplatform master? He creates spin-off products like it’s going out of style (it is, in fact, in style.)

Donald Trump inherited a sum of money and turned a junky hotel at Grand Central into a Hyatt as his first big business project. Real estate took off from there. But as much as Trump has become a real estate mogul, that’s not the end of his product line. As former GOP candidate Mitt Romney reminded the world recently, there have been other products beyond hotels, like Trump Airlines, Trump University, Trump Magazine, Trump Vodka, Trump Wine, Trump Water, Trump Steaks, Trump Mortgages, Trump Jewelry, Trump Mattresses, and the list goes on.

Video Monetization: Tips to Help Make It Happen

For regional magazines and niche publishers, video monetization is even more of a priority
Video monetization represents one of the great opportunities of the next five years for digital publishers, but success isn’t going to come easily, as the industry is still wrapping its head around it. As with many aspects of business for media companies,

Ad Blocking Impact Will Reach Unprecedented Levels in Coming Years

What we know: Ad blocking is on the rise. What we don’t know: whether the effort to block ad blockers will prove effective. What’s starting to become apparent: The ad blocking impact will be significant.

For online publishers who don’t rely solely on digital advertising for revenue, this is not crushing news. Hopefully, you’re one of them, because you have a multiplatform strategy in place. For online publishers who do, rely solely on digital advertising, read on for MediaPost’s coverage. And don’t panic!

Another Look at Marriage Between Facebook, Magazines

At IMAG, a big topic was Facebook. Magazines publishing on Facebook, specifically. And, with distrust bubbling to the surface with how the social media giant will use the content they coax from digital publishers, the news we relayed yesterday definitely showed signs of some trouble in paradise.

Today, though, we’re going in a different direction. Digiday recently had a streak of articles on positive trends for Facebook publishers. Let’s have a look at what they found!

How We’re Recycling Marketing Campaigns at Mequoda (And That One Time We Lost Revenue When We Stopped)

How we’re seeing a larger return on our marketing investment by recycling marketing campaigns across platforms
When I first started working at Mequoda almost 10 years ago, we wrote a lot of promotional copy. We sent several promotions per week, and each one was brand spanking new. For a company that was limited on resources at

Video Metrics: Tracking Views Is Tricky

Quantifying video metrics is a wide open enterprise for all, including publishers; plus, innovation and analytics from the experts
Views, visits, traffic, clicks, opens, time spent with media … charting response to your content and using that data to court ad buyers and convert subscribers is a challenge. Now, add video metrics to all of that,

The Future of Magazines Looks Responsive

The MPA just released their Magazine Media 360° report and the future of magazines is just as interesting to predict as ever. The top growing magazine brands year over year tapped into just about every general interest niche: Esquire, domino, Nylon, Town & Country, Fast Company, Harper’s Bazaar, Teen Vogue, Fit Pregnancy & Baby, Country Living, Popular Mechanics.

How Live Magazine Events Scale From Loss to Profit for Multiplatform Publishers

In-person anything is better than phone or email anything. A cold call could turn into a friendly conversation about the latest Game of Thrones, whereas a cold email could just end up in the junk box. An in-person business meeting is how real sales professionals close deals, not over the phone or through WebEx. There’s nothing that replaces an in-person event when your goal is to build a connection with a customer, and that includes magazine subscribers at magazine events. They offer the highest level of interaction and fidelity.

Online Video Publishing: Pluses and Minuses for Digital Magazines

Online video publishing, especially when taken in tandem with mobile advertising, is arguably the most alluring revenue opportunity to come along for digital magazines in a long time.

But, like any other opportunity, it must be seized and maximized, not squandered with poor practices and a lack of strategy. Coincidentally, establishing best practices and tactical standards is exactly the sort of thing we do here at Mequoda, so if you have any questions about implementing a system and creating robust but flexible content, give us a call.

But in the meantime, check out MediaPost’s coverage of online video publishing and more. We’ll start there on this Monday!

The Five Magazine Editions You Should Consider

There’s no such thing as publishing a magazine.

The fact is, if you want to transition your business from the traditional print model to 21st-century publishing – and the profits it promises – you may have to publish up to five different magazine editions of every title in your portfolio, with three of the five being table stakes.

Mequoda has learned from decades of experience that having multiple platform editions is crucial to successful digital publishing. And many traditional print publishers have learned, to their sorrow, that digital publishing is crucial to their very survival in the modern age. We’ll tell you all about it at our Digital Magazine Publishing Workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 2 in Boston.

If that sounds alarming, we can assure you it’s completely achievable – more on that below. But first, let’s consider all five of those editions that we’ve identified as the very heart of our Gold Members’ publishing empires.

Profitable Perks of Adding the Webinar Business Model to Your Multiplatform Arsenal

It always amazes me how people can worry about good things that happen. Sharon (not her real name) runs a successful $5 million special interest B2C publishing company that now has a successful webinar business model.

After 9/11, her live conference business took a hit, as did many live events during that time when many people feared air travel. Many years later, she did her first paid webinar, which drew about 80 people at $149 per person. And a few years after that, she was selling about 2,000 seats to 15 webinars, generating about $300,000 in revenue. In addition to being six percent of her top-line revenues, webinars rose to 17 percent of her profits.

But like many publishers who are just getting started in multiplatform publishing, Sharon worried that her webinar business was not growing fast enough, even though year-over-year revenues went up 15 percent. She also worried that webinar profit margins were too high to hold (with, mind you, almost no marketing cost, as she only promotes webinars using her email list). And, of course, she worried about whether she’d be able to come up with another new product type to keep her business growing (don’t we all?).

With Ad Blocking, Publishers Divided on Response

Ad blocking. Digital publishers are doing their best to combat it – you might be one of them – but they’re not necessarily in accordance with what the solution is. Good cop, bad cop? Hard ask, soft ask? How to block ad blockers?

MediaPost.com reports on this, as well as other industry trends recently. Let’s start the week with them!

Digital Media Industry News: MPA Releases Latest Magazine Data

The Association of Magazine Media (MPA) released its Top 10 magazine brands on April 28, along with its most current audience data from March of 2016. The findings, compiled by MPA metrics arm Magazine Media 360°, continue to show strong growth and mark even more positive digital media industry news.

The Audience Report charted a 7.6% year-over-year increase in site visits, while putting gross traffic for digital magazines at 1.9 billion. The MPA also announced findings for magazines on social media, showing Likes and Followers total 900 million for online magazines, up 4% over last quarter.

Perhaps the biggest digital media industry news? Desktop/laptop audiences demonstraed notable growth for the first time in seven months, reaching more than 560 million users, a 6% increase.

Publishing Economics: Facebook, European Expansion, Ad Blocking

The volatility of publishing economics will be mitigated with a multiplatform strategy built on repeatable best practices. That is one of our core principles, and a big part of what the Mequoda Method is built on.

Still, it’s worth it to monitor the trends priming the pump of publishing economics, and Digiday certainly has us covered in that department this week. Let’s take a look at a few of their latest articles!

Online Media Industry News: Mobile, Advertising, Data

While there’s a lot to be excited and optimistic about, the online media industry is also full of pitfalls, mirages, and false leads that run into dead ends. We try to tell you about both ends of the divide!

The fundamentals of digital publishing include multiplatform strategy, subscription strategy, and advertising. But the proliferation of mobile video and audience data, while definitely serving their purpose, can sidetrack magazines.

TheMediaBriefing.com does a nice job of covering these realities and other online media industry news with some recent articles. Let’s take a look!

Association Magazines – Not Just for Members Anymore?

Association magazines have potential for B2B publishing success; plus, Facebook Instant Articles, the latest personnel moves, and more
Can association magazines transcend membership readers to engage in some serious audience development? One big name in the business is offering a resounding yes. We have to agree, of course. Legacies, startups, brands, B2Bs, and, yes, professional groups

Adjusting Your Multiplatform Advertising Revenue Model for the Digital Age

Does your advertising revenue model include content that delights and informs users, while similarly rewarding your advertisers?
As the digital publishing market has grown and changed, selling ad space has only become more difficult. The market is saturated. Sponsors aren’t happy with websites crowded with ads as publishers try to grow revenue (and users aren’t happy with

Digital Media Publishing News: NYM, Time Inc., and More

Advertising for Publishers: Programmatic, Ad Blocking, and More

Advertising for publishers is also well known as an adventure for publishers, or better yet, a “choose your own adventure” for publishers, rife with peril but also the possibility for cashing in. There are obstacles around every corner in the way of ad blocking and viewability, and new technologies that can act as implements in your quest.

Programmatic ads make for one of those tools, and it’s becoming more and more popular even as some question its efficacy. MediaPost has some coverage on this topic and more among recent posts!

Online Publishing Trends: Digital Diversity, Adaptation Challenges, and Beyond Native

Is there anything more mercurial than online publishing trends? Not many industries have a more evolving mindset, technologies, or revenue models.

On some days, this is a great thing, and on others, it can make your head spin. But stay calm! There’s a core strategy that will steer you through the storm.

You can figure it out for yourself, or you can check out our Mequoda System to get a feel for multiplatform publishing strategy to attract, engage, and convert consumers. Because, in the end, the bottom line is the bottom line, and you have to stick with the principles while experimenting with what works for you.

We are that chef. The ingredients are nearly limitless – they include everything from your portal to your email newsletter to your social media strategy to video and subscriptions. When we say multiplatform strategy, we mean it.

Mastering Subscription Marketing Language with a Story

So you’ve launched your subscription website. You’ve determined the right price, and how you want to offer your subscription to customers, and you’re ready to think about ways to entice, persuade and convince them, whether it’s copy on a landing page, or an outbound email. Publishing Video: Platforms, Monetization, Vertical, and More

The push behind publishing video or perishing is reaching a fever pitch now, and we must admit – it is in your best interests to start doing it. But do not fear: It’s not nearly as daunting a task as it might seem, and there are many ways to accomplish it.

Are you going to start producing slick, NYT-style slices of life overnight? No, probably not. But you can repurpose content with quick-hitting films, make behind-the-scenes features about producing stories, and share videos from other sources to start ginning up views and conversions.

You can also see what other digital magazines are doing. Digiday helps us out in that department today. Let’s get started!

When a Great Niche Publishing Strategy Spurs Growth

When we set out more than a decade ago to construct the most profitable niche publishing strategy for magazines, we took a big risk on how the new media industry would evolve. But it was a calculated risk, literally, as we broke down every aspect of digital publishing and then built it back up based on data analysis, audience behavior and consumer magazine stats, and the market we watched take shape during our combined 130 years’ worth of experience.

Digital Content Publishing News: Regional Magazines, Event Production, Online Advertising

Understanding the new model for digital content publishing via niche and multiplatform principles

Digital content publishing is greater than the sum of its parts; grasping this concept makes a successful multiplatform strategy possible.

While you’ll definitely have strengths and weaknesses as an online magazine, on balance, you must gain some traction on at least a few tracks

How to Publish a Magazine on the Platforms Readers Want

Since the printing press was invented, the best way to deliver readable content was always on the page. Until the advent of the web, consumers hadn’t even considered other ways to digest content beyond books, magazines and newsletters printed in a linear, bounded fashion.

But then the web arrived on personal computers, and then it arrived on mobile phones, and then on smartphones, in email, and through tablet devices.

How to Leverage and Sell Multi-Channel Marketing for Your Publication

How to leverage multi-channel marketing both internally and also to sell out your advertising packages

The human race doesn’t all live in one house, or all work at one business. We don’t drink our coffee the same way, and we all definitely do not save our pennies for the same exact vacation.

Digital Publishing Tools: Data, Video, Social, Subscriptions

Recent news from the Guardian, Economist, and DMS 2016 show the evolution of important digital publishing tools
Developing digital publishing tools and assembling a formidable tool box that can handle “everyday tasks” like producing multiplatform content as well as a rapidly changing business is the major challenge facing magazines today. It can’t be accomplished with just

Online Magazine Ads: News From Google, Apple, Trinity Mirror, and More

Most publishers – at least most niche and regional publishers – cannot live on online magazine ads alone, but of course they’re still a key component of any media operation.

The caveat? Generating enough revenue and keeping enough digital advertisers happy has gotten harder and harder as the media landscape has become more fractured and viewability has become more elusive. Or perhaps demands for better measurement have intensified.

Multiplatform advertising is doable, and it’s something Mequoda Members do well. And while we all deal with issues – whether it be struggling to decide on Facebook Instant Articles viability or the fear of getting swallowed up by Google; how to handle native well and how to battle ad blocking – the future is bright when it comes to online magazine ads.

Magazine Strategy: Email, Marketing, Metrics, Monetization

Checking in on the magazine strategy fueling digital publishers’ latest efforts
There are core tenets to magazine strategy, but it’s also mutable, malleable, and always evolving. We make it our business to not only develop our own best practices, but also to monitor the trends taking shape in the digital publishing business and pass them on

What is a Web Magazine?

What is a web magazine compared to a digital magazine or a magazine’s website?
The answer many people give to the common question, “What is a web magazine?” is often incorrect.

You’ll often be told that a magazine’s website is a web magazine, but strictly speaking that’s not correct.

Others believe a web magazine is the same thing

The Key Role of Audience Development in Multiplatform Publishing

Multiplatform publishing is the key to publishing success, and audience development is the job that gets you there

Sixteen years later, I can still remember the day a large publishing company, who’d been negotiating with my marketing services firm to revive a struggling magazine it owned, decided to cut its losses and shut the magazine down

Breaking News: Publishing Magazines Is a Profitable Model!

Helping companies maximize the vast potential of publishing magazines is not something we do for fun, although we definitely enjoy our work.

It’s our lifeblood.

When we set out more than a decade ago to construct the most profitable approach for publishing magazines, we took a big risk on how the new media industry would evolve. But it was a calculated risk, literally, as we broke down every aspect of digital publishing and then built it back up based on data analysis, audience behavior and consumer magazine states, and the market we watched take shape during our combined 130 years’ worth of experience.

Audience Engagement Strategy: Anchor Content, Atlantic, Google AMP

Audience engagement strategy is the alpha and omega of digital publishing. Or, really, publishing of any kind. Or, when you come to think of it, any business whatsoever.

So, why hasn’t anyone fully figured it out yet? Because there are a lot of different definitions and even languages going around when it comes to quantifying audience. Do you want as many people as possible reading your publication as possible? Do you want a loyal core of consumers returning day after day? Sure, definitely. Can you have both? Sometimes, but not always.

It all comes down to content and the successful distribution of content, and how you interact with your audience. Your tech matters as well – is your site responsive? Is it keeping up with the changing times?

Google Publishers: Accelerated Mobile Pages a Success So Far

Google publishers are embracing AMP, but some have questions; plus, niche publishing on Facebook and a glimpse at a top-tier social media strategy in action
When it comes to Google, publishers are always ready to devote resources to maximize its promise, as they should be. The search and digital services giant operates with greater transparency than

Twitter Publishing: What Hath Full-Length Wrought?

If you know the Mequoda Method, you know that Twitter publishing is important when it comes to multiplatform publishing. But how much does that importance depend on this social media strategy’s format?

Meanwhile, Facebook Instant Articles is expanding, as well.

We’ve also got news to relay from Business2Community.com on promoting content and ad blocking programs. Let’s get started!
