Good journalists are prepared with questions before interviews start. However, it’s also important to be able to think quickly and listen intently, as the subject of an interview can change quite rapidly. Formulating new questions off the cuff happens often, and can lead to some of the most interesting answers.

If you are paying close attention to the interviewee, it can be difficult to take accurate notes in the midst of interview. Luckily technology can easily assist editors with their most important activities of collecting information.

Recording audio for editors

There are three easy ways to record audio, and one of these is completely free.

First, PC and Mac users can download Audacity for free. The recording and editing software can help editors record audio for free; all that is needed is a computer and a microphone. And since many computers offer internal microphones, it’s easy to download and begin. If you aren’t happy with the quality of your microphone, there are plenty of affordable USB-based options.

Second, if you own an iPhone, you can download iTalk for $1.99. This app will let you record phone conversations, or you can place your iPhone in front of a live conversation.

Lastly, you could buy a portable audio recording device. This would likely provide the highest quality, but will end up costing around $100 for a very good device. It’s up to you and the budget you have for audio recording.
