According to a Mashable article that interviewed Ryan Roslansky, the Director of Project Management for LinkedIn, endorsements of products or services become visible to all connections and may become viral due to this fact.

It appears LinkedIn is attempting to incorporate more activities from businesses instead of just business professionals. This attempt is truly important to LinkedIn so it can compete with Facebook and Twitter, which are heavily used by many businesses.
