Your editorial guide to making work days a little shorter

So you’re the new editor of a daily online blog, tasked with content marketing and audience development responsibilities. You might be posting five to 20 or more new blogs per week. Since online editors are the new online marketers, you’re probably tasked with a few other things too, like writing landing pages, email newsletters and anything that requires great writing.

So how can one person manage all of this content? I can tell you from experience that it’s not easy, but these five simple steps should at least make your day a little less hectic.

1. Use old articles to help write sales copy.

You’re probably already subtly promoting some kind of product or service that you offer in every article that you write. If you wrote one or several amazing articles on the topic at hand, don’t be afraid to snip a paragraph or two here and there and add it to your sales copy.

2. Create a diverse editorial schedule, so that you don’t get bored.

Your editorial schedule is where you have the opportunity to organize all of the content you will produce for the next pre-determined amount of time. It could be a week, but more likely it’s about a month or as far out as a year.

However, there are many different ways that you can slice and dice an editorial calendar so that you’re truly creating something new every time that you post. Read 3 Must-Read Ideas for Spicing Up Your Editorial Schedule for more on that.

3. Plan far, far, far in advance for everything you intend to write.

Most Mequoda System Editors work seven days or more in advance to allow time for planning, emergencies, approvals, vacations and other things. Creating that editorial schedule I just talked about will keep the great content coming and won’t give you any surprises. 4. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose.

You have great content that’s going to be just as good a month from now or a year from now. Hey, this article in itself uses a dose of repurposed content here and there. How else am I going to get you to read those super helpful editorial management articles that you missed? You’ll find a couple ideas for repurposing content from live events and products in 3 Sources for Quick & Easy Blog Posts and some more in A Few Ideas for Turning One Product into Ten.

5. Ask for help.

You don’t have to do it all on your own. Asking for interviews or guest posts from people in your niche will not only take the load off of you, but it will also add a new dimension to the insight you can offer your readers. Blogger Linkup is a great site to subscribe to if you’re looking for guest bloggers.
