The weekend magazine USA Weekend, which is a title from Gannett, will be shutting down as of December 28th, reports Folio.

The reason for the end of USA Weekend appears to be due to another move Gannett had made involving USA Today. This change was the addition of “butterfly” editions in the USA Today, which includes a detailed weekend section.

According to the article from Folio, “Larry Kramer, president and publisher of USA Today, says consumer research ultimately led them to pick those “butterfly” editions over USA Weekend.”

Gannett may have found a recipe for a superior product with the butterfly editions in USA Today, making it unnecessary to continue with USA Weekend. This comes at a good time for the company as USA Weekend had been struggling recently. According to the article, the magazines readership has decreased by 900,000 and its ad pages had shrunk by 9.7 percent last year.
