Sew up some summer fun with the June issue of We Like Sewing!

Are you ready for some Summer fun? We sure are! And here at We Like Sewing, we’ve put together an issue to help to make the most of the warm-weather months — from recycled shorts to a perfect poolside cover-up! Make something for yourself, your family room — plus some tiny travel accessories. Our new collection of pretty and practical patterns is ready and waiting.

Sometimes it feels like the 60s are still here with us. Guess what? They are, and in a good way! For a project to keep you feeling cool and looking cool, you can’t go wrong with our Palm Springs Summer Caftan. This project is cut in one piece, made with a lightweight fabric like chiffon, cotton gauze, batiste, or lawn — something that drapes well under its own weight. Most of the work is in the preparation; there’s actually more prep work than sewing. When you’re done, you’ll have a lovely V-neck pull-on caftan that’s perfect for pool-side lounging.

Before the hot weather really hits, check your dresser for summer shorts. Need a new pair? Recycle those old jeans with our Sunny Season Jeans to Shorts Refashion pattern! This is a great, low-sew pattern that sewists of any level can take on. The embroidery is optional, but don’t pass up on the fun fringed edges! Use an old pair of jeans or pick up a “new” pair at your local thrift shop. With a rotary cutter and some sharp scissors, your new shorts will be ready before you know it!

When it’s time for a picnic or you’re packing snacks for the road, take the sustainable route and make some Snack Time Reusable Sandwich Bags. This is a great environmental alternative to the endless stream of plastic snack and sandwich bags, and it’s much more economical, too! Make these practical, reusable bags pretty with your choice of fun fabric; add embroidery for a personal touch.

Summer’s a great time to travel. Make sure you have the right bag for the right stuff. Make our Bon Voyage Mini Travel Bag to hold whatever small things you need to keep organized: sunscreen, charging cords, and other travel essentials. If you like working with precuts, you’re going to love this pattern! Use canvas printed fat quarters and fat eighths for the outside and fat quarter lining fabric for the inside. Add a zipper and tote your tiny things in style. This bag is so cute, you may want to make more than one!

Picking the right zipper for a project can feel like a challenge to some beginning sewists: so many choices! No worries, we’ve got you covered. Read All About Zippers: Our Simple Guide for Sewing Beginners to learn about zippers from A to Z. When you’re done, you’ll know more about zippers than you ever thought possible!

Another great technique to master is mitered corners. They give your projects a clean, professional finish — and they cut down on fabric waste, too! Read 6 Easy Steps to Sewing Mitered Corners and you’ll have another solid sewing skill to add to your toolbox. You’ll discover there are plenty of opportunities to use this technique: on napkins, quilts, garment hems and more!

You don’t have to be an expert at sewing to make any of the projects in our June Issue. Every pattern in this issue includes a detailed template, pattern notes, and a complete list of the tools and materials you need to succeed. Whether you’re just starting out sewing or you’re a seasoned sewist, you’re going to love these easy breezy summer patterns. Ready to create something beautiful? Let’s go!
