Think selling magazines is hard? Look at Netflix. Their offer is that you can try out their video streaming service for 30 days, then pay $8 a month. Not $10 or $12 per year like a magazine, but $8 every single month. And is

How to Turn Samplers into Subscribers

In his book, Free: The Future of Radical Price, Chris Anderson wrote, “People often don’t care as much about things they don’t pay for, and as a result they don’t think as much about how they consume them. Free can encourage gluttony, hoarding, thoughtless consumption, waste, guilt, and greed. We take stuff because it’s there,

The Do’s and Don’ts of Free in Multiplatform Publishing

What’s “free” to the naked eye isn’t exactly free. It costs money to produce a product, even when it’s recycled. And for the user, they pay either with their eyeballs and data on an ad-driven site, or with their email address on a product-driven site.

Just think of all the “free” that you give away on your website:

Native Ads Aren’t New, Time to Ditch Yahoo Accounts, Advertisers Get Picky

All this hype about native ads gave us a chuckle in yesterday’s weekly Mequoda editorial meeting. In case everybody’s forgotten, native ads aren’t new, a fad, or even advertising’s hottest thing. Remember advertorials? Magazines have been selling them, and publishing them, for decades! Digiday’s interpretation made me laugh, saying the name switch is like “putting lipstick on the advertorial pig.” Some would disagree because the ads are supposed to replace traditional online advertising, but AdWeek editor Mike Shields tweeted early on, saying “we’ve had ‘sponsored sections’ since 90s. Ditching banners is what’s revolutionary.”

A Way to Generate More Email Sales with Your Email Program

Are you utilizing this one important part of your email marketing program?

Have you ever heard that timing is extremely important to the success of email marketing programs? Sometimes this timing relates to the days, time of day, and frequency in which you send emails. Other times it relates to the specific activities an audience member is engaging in at specific times throughout your relationship.

9 Tips for the Modern Email Marketer

Ways to get the most from your email marketing activities

As a daily editor, I’m always keeping my eyes open for the topics that our audience cares about. From email marketing to audience development and the advancements within the digital publishing community, there is always new content to share or existing strategies to remind people of.

Over the last few months, it has seemed that the topic of email marketing has been growing in popularity. Each week I find more industry members discussing ways to improve an email marketing strategy. Or they are sharing statistics on email marketing studies they have conducted.

Making Waves with Email Marketing

5 ways to pay better attention to email marketing fundamentals

Many look at “making waves” as a bad thing. It’s used to describe the creation of a disturbance or controversy. Today however, the only disturbance we are discussing is the way to make favorable changes to your email marketing program.

Since the majority of email relationships begin at your website, there is a need to not only have your landing pages designed with the intent of converting, it’s also important to have pages designed to facilitate the email relationship.

Email Newsletter Analysis for Advanced Campaigns

Are you familiar with advancements that may change your email campaigns significantly, but don’t know how to make these changes?

Email marketing can be very successful if you have a product or service that people want to buy.

Email marketing can also be very stressful if you aren’t seeing the results you believe are within reach.

Email Trends to Look for in 2012

While perusing the Internet, I was surprised to see yet another article discussing the death of email.

Although this article seemed to be directed toward internal business activities and the focus of other platforms for internal communication, there’s an interesting scenario that exists: some companies are attempting to eliminate internal email communications while others are expanding external email communications.

According to new data from StrongMail, 60% of the 939 business owners surveyed said they plan on increasing email budget for 2012. This number is higher than social media spend, which is expected by 55% of business owners.

Making Money with Digital Video and Book Bundles

Bundle first, create new products later

While most of the publishers I work with were not in the video production business five years ago, virtually all of them are today. In some cases, the sales of video content now accounts for as much as 20 percent of their total revenue. In addition to sourcing third-party video, many have also built their own production studio and are creating dozens of new titles this year.

Whether you have 10,000, 100,000, or 1 million e-mail subscribers, your e-mail marketing program still has a limited number of slots. Most of the publishers I work with focus on 2 to 5 products, or perhaps I should say offers, each week. Those who have seen revenue per e-mail subscriber increase over the past few years, pay close attention to the performance of the products and offers occupying those precious e-mail promotion slots.

Video Email Marketing: Is 2011 The Year For It?

Will you be testing video email marketing to increase click-through rates this year?

Late in 2010, many different marketing research companies has posed the question, “will 2011 be the year for video email marketing?”

It’s a valid question, considering that online video is finally getting its bearings and it only seems right that we’d start embedding in email our great new videos that are already increasing our landing page conversion rates, right? Well let’s see.

Marketing Thought Leader Don Morgan noted in an October article that GetResponse conducted a survey that “predicted a dramatic increase in the use of video in their email marketing program, with over 80% of respondents indicating they would begin or expand their use of video emails this year.”

The Online Publishing Email Strategy

Do you want to maximize your customer lifetime value?

Successful publishers generate online revenue by selling either advertising/sponsorships or physical information products— books, magazines, newsletters, live events, DVDs, CDs, etc. Many sell both.

For many successful online publishers, the majority of their page views occur with their email. Email newsletters drive page views for both product-driven websites and ad-driven websites.

Many online publishers use email circulation as a primary metric for measuring their success. We’ve seen revenue per email subscriber vary from $10 per year for B2C publishers to as high as $80 per year. The goal of a publisher’s email marketing program should be to increase customer lifetime value.
