Getting Your Free eBook on Amazon’s Bestseller List

How a free eBook by CopyBlogger’s Brian Clark ended up paired with Amazon’s #1 Bestseller

“You may distribute this report freely, and/or bundle it as a free bonus with other products, as long as it is left completely intact, unaltered and delivered via this PDF file. You may also republish excerpts as long as they are accompanied by an attribution link back to http://www.copyblogger.com.”

Those are the words printed on the front of the free 30-page eBook “Viral Copy” by CopyBlogger.com’s Brian Clark. When Dr. Joe Vitale released his book “Life’s Missing Instruction Manual” in 2006, he took full advantage of the statement.

According to Clark, Dr. Vitale launched his books with a promotion called “The Mother of All Bribes”, where he offered free eBooks with the purchase of his book. Seeing that his book “Life’s Missing Instruction Manual” went to Amazon’s #1 Bestseller after it was published, not only did he make money with this “buy one, get more free” promotion, he also lent a hand to all of his free eBook writers who rode the fast lane to more subscribers.

Clark said that “Joe read Viral Copy, liked it, and included it in his “bribe.” So thanks to Joe’s number-one-selling status, I’m getting towed along with him for the ride. I may well get more new subscribers from this than any A-List blogger link has provided.”

Why this is a good idea (even if you’re already convinced):

  • You should already be including a link back to your site on every page of your free eBook anyhow
  • People are going to share the free eBook whether you like it or not
  • Instead of making people feel bad about it with copyright, copyright, copyright, you’re telling them to PLEASE write about it
  • Getting paired with a #1 Amazon Bestseller is pretty remarkable
  • Nobody is paying for your free eBook anyhow!

This was very, very helpful. I’ve been researching a strategy for Amazon so I can experiment with reaching and helping more women get what they want in their love lives by going mainstream, rather than only with my online business – but my questions have more to do with “What does being #1 on Amazon get you?” than the strategy to get there…What I’d love to see is a strategy for leveraging that “bestseller” status online – with getting more incoming quality links, etc., what PR offers, etc. are actually worthwhile, when does Amazon start showing your book as “recommended” when people look at books on related topics…in other words, what does it get you as opposed to just sending people to your own site? thanks in advance if you have any answers, Rori
