A Shift in Consumer Behavior on Social Media

Do you know the most trusted social media sources?

The social media landscape is changing.

According to the GlobalWebIndex “Annual Report 2011”, a shift is taking place in how consumers use social media.

An article from eMarketer discusses this shift, which has put the distribution of content as the focal point of social media usage. Instead of creating the content, social media users are sharing professionally created content more through social networks, video sharing platforms and blogs.

Trusted product reviews appeal to Internet users the most as 50% of users worldwide reported an increase in their trust of contacts on social networks. This same group reported a 21% increase in trust on blog sites.

Professional sources of information like newspapers and TV gained only minor amounts of trust, 3% and 2.5% respectively.

However, Edelman’s “Trust Barometer” report for 2011 showed a decline in the trust of “a person like me” and a rise in trust for industry experts.

Other research has shown that friends and family are still the most trusted sources for getting information on products or services. Ketchum is one company that reported such findings.

For companies using social networks, it’s important to respond to comments, be honest and deliver quality content in order to gain the trust of your audience.
