An Audience Development Plan for Targeted Writing

Five steps to an audience development plan

Writing for audience development begins with keyword research. What are your audience members searching for? How many people are searching for the content you provide? What is the related competition on the keyword phrases that you want to rank for in search engines?

Knowing the answers to these questions will provide you with a foundation for your audience development plan. Let’s take a look at a step-by-step approach for audience development writing.

Audience development plan step #1: Conduct keyword research. If you already have the uber keyword phrases and topics to target, you need to take a deeper dive into the related content. Find the keyword phrases that are aligned with your content.

Audience development plan step #2: Determine the annual search volume. The Google Keyword Tool will tell you how many people are searching for the keyword phrases on an exact monthly basis. Multiple this number by 12 to get the total annual search volume.

Audience development plan step #4: Write the content. Always write before optimizing. Your content will sound more organic this way. Make sure you place your targeted keyword phrase in the title, subhead, and body copy. Optimize any related images with it as well.

Audience development plan step #5: Promote your new content. From social media outlets, email, and online press release distribution, you have the chance to get the word out, drive more traffic, and potentially improve the ranking position of your content.
