PodCamp NYC 2.0 Coverage: Tactical Transparency

Tactical Transparency – (Being Naked on the Web) with John C. Havens

John C. Havens on Tactical Transparency

John C. Havens, author of an upcoming book called Tactical Transparency held this session at PodCamp NYC 2.0 to talk about how you can be effective marketing on the web via social marketing without looking like a marketer. However, it turned into a discussion on how the content we put on the web follows us around.

“The days are gone that you can be entrenched as an organization and not suffer the consequences when you do wrong” Havens noted. He talked about how you need to maintain a community with your organization by being open and honest but without leaking too much information depending on how thick you want your company transparency to be.

This session soon transformed again into a fascinating discussion on how companies hire people. The people in the room shared their different stories of how they hire people, all by the way, included a quick glance at myspace and Facebook profiles before applicants even got a chance at an interview. One attendee said, “We looked at this applicants Myspace profile and his #1 interest was “desk drumming”. We all do a little desk drumming once in a while, but if that’s really your #1 interest, and we know you’d be sharing a workspace with other people who might not appreciate it, that’s a big “no thanks”. It’s as simple as that.”

Take-away: If you’re applying to a new job, make sure to clean up your online presence first.
