Anyone who follows social media closely has seen spikes in activity based on certain events. A new study has taken a look at this.

An article from eMarketer looks at data shared by ShareThis, and according to the article, “social media users are much more likely to share content via mobile devices after a major current event occurs.” To determine this data, ShareThis analyzed major events like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Ferguson Riots, the Apple Launch, and Shark Week.

For these popular events, smartphones were the primary device used for 52% of the respondents. Desktop was the primary device for 28% of respondents while tablets were used by 20%. On normal news days, “desktops account for the same amount of content sharing as smartphones—43%” Tablets were less used at only 11%.
