In 2011, it’s fair to say that content marketing has caught on.

The concept has been around for years, and numerous practitioners have developed strategies around it.

All good content marketing strategies focus on educating and informing audiences, either about a product or a service.

What type of content do you think works best for content marketing? This of course depends on a number of variables, including if your focus is B2B or B2C, the subject matter your content is on and the demographics of your audience.

A recent article from eMarketer discussed findings from Focus Research’s “Marketers’ Benchmarks 2011: A Survey of Marketers’ Priorities & Challenges”.

The three most popular content types for B2B and B2C content marketers

Blogs, with 39% of respondent’s vote, was reported as the most valuable content type for business-to-business content marketers in North America. Webinars and virtual events came in a close second with 38% of respondents citing it as the most valuable content type.

Industry whitepapers rounded out the top three, with 31% of the vote.

As for business-to-consumer content marketers in North America, blogs (37%) and webinars and virtual events (34%) were the top two selections again.

Coming in third with 29% of the vote was data-driven research reports. This content type came in fifth for B2B companies with 20% of the vote.

The rest of the list of the most valuable content types for content marketing consists of:

-Videos (23% for B2B, 20% for B2C)

-User/peer-created content (17% for B2B, 23% for B2C)

-Vendor-sponsored whitepapers (10% for B2B)

-Podcasts (6% for B2B, 9% for B2C)

The value of blogging

According to this data, 76% of content marketers have cited blogs as the most valuable content type.

This isn’t surprising as blogs can house an array of content, are customizable and its content can be shared with ease.
