SIPA Member Profile: Biehl Writes His Own ‘Classic’ Story

SIPA: What was your first job out of college and how did you get into this business?
BIEHL: In the early 1970s, I graduated from Columbia with a master’s in Chinese studies, and the timing should have been perfect since Richard Nixon had just “opened the door to China.” But at the time, the State Department was not looking for someone who aspired to be a communist and wanted Nixon forcibly removed from the White House. So … in the worst recession since the Depression (until this one), I hung out my shingle as a temporary typist … and two years later I was running the information/publications division of a 25-person higher education association, where I wrote lots of things, including books on nondiscrimination. In the late 1970s, I wrote a book on disability law compliance for Dick Thompson of the Revenue Sharing Advisory Service (which morphed into Thompson Publishing Group), who then hired me to launch a new company and develop dozens of new products. I started AIS seven years later.

SIPA: What was your first job out of college and how did you get into this business?
JEFFERSON: My first job out of college was working as a junior accountant for a CPA firm. During tax season we were expected to bill a minimum of 60 hours per week which meant that for days at a time, I didn’t get to see my baby while she was awake. I jumped at the opportunity to join the accounting department at the local newspaper. I was responsible for producing all of the financial statements. The CFO was great and taught me about the newspaper business although as my mom says, ink runs in my blood—my grandparents owned a weekly newspaper in Burgaw, N.C. I started “Chesapeake Family” on a dare from my husband.

If you happened to be watching “Market Morning” on Business News Network—Canada’s only all-business and financial news television channel—on Wednesday morning, Nov. 10, you saw a SIPA member take center stage. Michael McLarney, editor and publisher of Hardlines, provided excellent guest commentary on a segment about RONA, one of Canada’s largest retail hardware stores.

“The industry does not rely on housing starts as much as it used to,” he says in the interview hosted by BNN anchor Pamela Ritchie. “It’s very much a repair and renovation market that drives our industry now. So we’re waiting on consumer confidence [to see] if people start spending money again.”
