2 Email Types for Increasing Website Traffic for Online Businesses

An email strategy utilizing these email types can help you sell more products and build your audience

The types of emails you send to your list have a lot of impact. Not only does the content have to be great, or people will opt-out, it has to contain real value.

To your audience, value is anything that helps them live their lives better. For instance, if your target audience is interested in your company because you provide top-notch information on healthcare, then your content is valuable to them because it allows for healthier living.

SIPA Member Profile: Biehl Writes His Own ‘Classic’ Story

Rick Biehl, President and Publisher, Atlantic Information Services, Inc., Washington, D.C.

SIPA: What was your first job out of college and how did you get into this business?
BIEHL: In the early 1970s, I graduated from Columbia with a master’s in Chinese studies, and the timing should have been perfect since Richard Nixon had just “opened the door to China.” But at the time, the State Department was not looking for someone who aspired to be a communist and wanted Nixon forcibly removed from the White House. So … in the worst recession since the Depression (until this one), I hung out my shingle as a temporary typist … and two years later I was running the information/publications division of a 25-person higher education association, where I wrote lots of things, including books on nondiscrimination. In the late 1970s, I wrote a book on disability law compliance for Dick Thompson of the Revenue Sharing Advisory Service (which morphed into Thompson Publishing Group), who then hired me to launch a new company and develop dozens of new products. I started AIS seven years later.

SIPA Member Profile: Jefferson’s ‘Family’ Branches Out

Donna Jefferson, Publisher, Jefferson Communications, Annapolis, Md.

SIPA: What was your first job out of college and how did you get into this business?
JEFFERSON: My first job out of college was working as a junior accountant for a CPA firm. During tax season we were expected to bill a minimum of 60 hours per week which meant that for days at a time, I didn’t get to see my baby while she was awake. I jumped at the opportunity to join the accounting department at the local newspaper. I was responsible for producing all of the financial statements. The CFO was great and taught me about the newspaper business although as my mom says, ink runs in my blood—my grandparents owned a weekly newspaper in Burgaw, N.C. I started “Chesapeake Family” on a dare from my husband.

‘Ambassador’ Strategy Pays Off for McLarney

If you happened to be watching “Market Morning” on Business News Network—Canada’s only all-business and financial news television channel—on Wednesday morning, Nov. 10, you saw a SIPA member take center stage. Michael McLarney, editor and publisher of Hardlines, provided excellent guest commentary on a segment about RONA, one of Canada’s largest retail hardware stores.

“The industry does not rely on housing starts as much as it used to,” he says in the interview hosted by BNN anchor Pamela Ritchie. “It’s very much a repair and renovation market that drives our industry now. So we’re waiting on consumer confidence [to see] if people start spending money again.”

The Online Publishing Email Strategy

Do you want to maximize your customer lifetime value?

Successful publishers generate online revenue by selling either advertising/sponsorships or physical information products— books, magazines, newsletters, live events, DVDs, CDs, etc. Many sell both.

For many successful online publishers, the majority of their page views occur with their email. Email newsletters drive page views for both product-driven websites and ad-driven websites.

Many online publishers use email circulation as a primary metric for measuring their success. We’ve seen revenue per email subscriber vary from $10 per year for B2C publishers to as high as $80 per year. The goal of a publisher’s email marketing program should be to increase customer lifetime value.

Email Marketing Tips to Leverage PPC For List Building

Boost your email marketing list by creating niche free products to give away

PPC (or Pay-Per-Click) isn’t a huge part of our marketing strategy. We rely heavier on organic forms of marketing that do not require the exchange of money, like organic search engine marketing and social media marketing.

However, PPC can be an added form of promotion when a special event or product is coming up. For instance, we have been promoting for our Content Marketing 2010 Seminars through internal and external promotions. We decided that PPC was worth utilizing for these promotional efforts, as the events are one-time opportunities.

Using Sponsorships as an Internet Business Model

This free report from Mequoda Group discusses how selling sponsorships can be used as one Internet Business Model that’ll help develop your online media business

(Nationwide)—Multi-faceted sponsorship opportunities are valuable commodities for online publishers. For instance, if a publisher has a core of editorial topics, they can potentially sell sponsorships for each individual topic.

The best way to approach this is to offer complete exclusivity on any of the given topic pages. The sponsorship package may include promotion on the leaderboard, a large ad box, a medium ad box and a skyscraper advertisement.

“System” — The Word that Online Publishing Forgot

What we mean by a Mequoda System and why you should care

Here at Mequoda Group, we often are asked what we mean by a Mequoda System, especially now that our business has grown to include building out full-blown digital content marketing system websites for other publishers.

Despite the misconceptions of some of our professional colleagues, the word “system,” as used on our website, is not a combination of computer hardware, software, and peripheral devices.

New Email Marketing Trends

Have you thought about using podcasts for building email circulation? With the popularity of iTunes and online radio like Pandora, podcasts are an easy way to reach eager listeners through the Internet.

Creating a podcast is not as technically challenging as it may sound. There are free software programs available that are fairly user-friendly. Try Audacity, FeedforAll or Easy Podcast.

Next, create a rapid conversion landing page. This is where users will “land” to download the podcast. The RCLP should be keyword-rich and highlight the content of your podcast.

Looking for Ways to Build Your Email Marketing Lists?

Three external sources for building email circulation

It seems everyone is trying to build email lists nowadays. While paying for a book the other night in Barnes & Noble, I was asked to give my email address in order to be sent messages from the company.

Even with social media gaining more popularity, the power of email is still strong. Many companies have designed respectable policies for privacy, take email correspondence seriously by creating a detailed schedule for the content and take precautions to assure the security behind email communications.
