We begin with The Atlantic, a subscription website publisher who is experiencing significant growth with its membership program. Digiday reports, “The Masthead has grown the program gradually, testing it with a small beta group of 250 before opening it up to subscribers for $100 a year. This week, membership was opened to everyone, at a price of $120 a year. Starting narrow has enabled The Atlantic to isolate the feedback of its most devoted readers. It’s been testing different content formats in email to the group and asked recipients to grade them on a scale of one to five.”

Outside Shows Vigor in Digital Magazine Publishing Efforts

As a 36-year-old, Outside magazine from Mariah Media is, naturally, quite physically fit. Established in 1977 by Rolling Stone co-founder and publisher Jann Wenner (also current owner of Men’s Journal and US Weekly), the magazine was sold to its current owner in 1979.

Since 2010, it has also had the luxury in terms of audience exposure of a sister satellite television network, Outside Television. Presumably that has helped it survive the print magazine downturn; since 2010, just after the iPad’s debut and digital magazine publishing was born, Outside has lost a miniscule 0.2% of its circulation, and stands at 685,164 as of June 2013.

Business Insider Bets on Long Form

Capital New York is reporting that Business Insider will be investing in longer format articles. Business Insider founder and editor-in-chief Henry Blodget told Capital New York they plan on investing “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in long form content. Joe Pompeo writes, “A chunk of that money will go toward hiring an editor whose job will be ‘to decide the best frequency, length, and approach of these stories, as well as the time and resources invested in each one,’ said Blodget over email.
